You need to have balance when it comes to running a successful dentistry practice, and one aspect that should not be overlooked is new technology. Integrating new methods and tools is something that you should start looking into today, because you don't want to be left behind by your competitors. Start simple and consider which of the following advancements would be best for you, your staff and your practice. Whether you choose to implement these or they serve as inspiration for something else, get started!

Advantages and disadvantages

There are many advantages to adopting digital dentistry practices. With new technologies, you are able to get more accurate readings for your patients, efficiency will be improved compared to old practices, and the outcomes will be more predictable. This will make scheduling appointments easier, and help you gain more patients because they often prefer going to dentists that use the latest advancements.

There are some disadvantages as well, and the first is the price at the front end will be higher for most of the new dentistry technologies. Also, it can be difficult to get your team trained on the new machines and methods of dentistry. Once you adopt a new technology, it's imperative that you set aside time to read the manual, or take advantage of any training that is offered, and then properly train your staff on the device. Without understanding how to use it, you and your staff will let it sit in a corner unused.

Today's advancements

Most practices already have digital records and ways to educate staff and patients, but if you don't have the advanced software, this is the first method you should implement because it is very affordable, and easy to learn. Incorporating an iPad in your practice is a great way to teach patients about their dental structure, and what needs to be fixed. It is much more effective than drawings and pamphlets, and it is a technology that is continually being built on through apps and website development.

Digital radiology allows you to take a better quality of images that are easier to review, and the time needed to get the required information will be reduced. One huge advantage is that a lower amount of radiation is needed. Plus, you can use this new advancement with tablets and voice activation.

Intraoral imaging and CAD/CAM has a lot of pros. They are quicker, consistent, and economical. Intraoral images are a great way to remind patients to make their follow up appointments, and to show them what work needs to be done. This is going to be the way that elastomeric impressions are replaced. It's just a matter of time.

And more

We've only mentioned a few of the new technologies above, but know there are many more available to you such as lasers and cone beams. Your dental patients deserve the most accurate and efficient technologies available.

Remember, technology is meant to save time and improve the way that you practice, so choose a few a new pieces to start integrating today!
